FORMER Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams has checked herself into a mental health facility.
Williams, 37, is being treated at a facility outside Los Angeles and has been there for several days at least, according to TMZ.
“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognise when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing,” she tweeted to fans on Tuesday.
“Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.”
Williams has been open about her mental health struggles in the past.
Last October, she opened up about her battle with depression during an interview on US chat show The Talk, revealing she once experienced suicidal thoughts.
“I didn’t know until I was in my thirties what was going on. I just thought it was growing pains,” Williams said.
“I’ve been suffering since the age of between 13 and 15. At that age, I didn’t know what to call it.”
She claimed her situation got “really, really bad … to the point of I was suicidal.”
“I was to that place where it got so dark and heavy … I wanted out,” she said.
During her time in Destiny’s Child, Williams said she told the group’s manager Mathew Knowles — bandmate Beyonce’s dad — about her depression.
She recalled her conversation with Knowles, saying, “When I disclosed it to our manager at the time — bless his heart — he was like, ‘Y’all just signed a multimillion-dollar deal, you’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?’ So I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m just tired.’”
