Champion jockey Hugh Bowman returns to Sydney racing at Warwick Farm today and he is shaping up as the punter’s pal with three strong winning chances for Godolphin to close out the meeting.
Taniko, Deprive and Regent will attract plenty of attention and each have been placed in races by trainer James Cummings where – if they handle the expected wet conditions – they all loom large. The question of whether the promising Deprive will handle a wet track would be the only reason he is not a very short-priced favourite in the Cabra-Vale Diggers Sprint (1000 metres).
Deprive’s pedigree suggests he should swim – his sire Denman won on a heavy 10 and his dam Defrock is by Canny Lad who is a noted producer of wet trackers. He is unbeaten in Sydney, unbeaten first-up, unbeaten at Warwick Farm and an impressive recent trial winner against open company.
When Bowman is legged on board Taniko in the Russolini Group Handicap (1200 metres) he will be hoping for better luck than Brenton Avdulla experienced in her second-up defeat at the last Canterbury night meeting.
