“The NSW government is committed to playing a State of Origin game in Sydney in 2020,” NSW Minister for Sport John Sidoti said. “We are working very closely with the NRL to host that game at ANZ Stadium before redevelopment commences.
“The planning process for redevelopment of ANZ Stadium has begun as the NSW government continues to deliver world class venues for the state, further enhancing our position as a global and sporting destination.”
The NSW government is committed to playing a State of Origin game in Sydney in 2020.
It gives anchor tenants the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs the option to play some of their home games at ANZ Stadium.
The $360 million Bankwest Stadium at Parramatta looms as a logical option for the remainder of the year, while the Bulldogs are believed to have also expressed an interest to play more games at Belmore.
The NRL will consult the NSW government over the venues for the 2021 and 2022 grand finals with a brand new Sydney Football Stadium potentially online for the latter.
“We will continue to work closely with the NSW government to find a solution which both recognises the government’s significant investment in stadia but also provides the best options available for the game,” NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said.
“We always knew there would be some challenges for our clubs and for the game with major works being done to the stadium network in Sydney.
“We will work closely with the clubs as we develop the premiership schedule in coming years, knowing ANZ Stadium as well as Allianz Stadium will not be available.
“Bankwest Stadium has been a wonderful addition to the sport this season and while we know there will be certain challenges over the next few years we also need to consider the fantastic result for the game when Allianz Stadium and ANZ Stadium are completed.
“We are not losing sight of the fact that over a four-year period we will have three purpose-built rectangular venues opening in Sydney. This remains a great result for the game.”
