The First Lady has previously been played on the sketch comedy show by Cecily Strong, but has never appeared as herself on the long-running comedy show.
So far, she has not responded to Baldwin’s invitation.
In an apparent dig at Donald Trump, Baldwin said the show would welcome the First Lady “as a hero”.
The star’s invite comes amid the uproar over Melania’s bizarre fashion statement during a surprise visit to immigrant children separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border.
A large message on the back of the First Lady’s Zara jacket said: “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?”
The jacket choice stunned the world, with critics describing it as “callous” and offensive”.
The decision to wear it came as a shock after Melania Trump last week criticised her husband’s immigration stance, calling for an end to the policy of separating children from their parents.
At the time, her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said the First Lady believes “we need to be a country that follows all laws,” but also one “that governs with heart”.
Ms Grisham said Melania “hates to see children separated from their families” and hopes “both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform”.
In response to the jacket controversy, Oregon clothing company Wildfang created an “I really care” collection of clothes to raise money for immigrants.
Amid the massive backlash, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN “there was no hidden message”.
Grisham later tweeted: “Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @FLOTUS greatly. If media would spend their time & energy on her actions & efforts to help kids – rather than speculate & focus on her wardrobe – we could get so much accomplished on behalf of children. #SheCares #ItsJustAJacket”
The US President, meanwhile, disagreed.
“Melania’s jacket refers to the Fake News Media,” he tweeted. “Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
